Coming Summer 2026!

Horsemanship Lessons At Western Diamond

About the WDR Equine Program

At Western Diamond Ranch, we don’t just teach riding lessons—we teach the skills and knowledge to foster safe, confident horse people step by step, from the ground up.

Our structured western lesson program is built with middle and high school aged students in mind, helping them develop real-world skills, responsibility, and confidence both in and out of the saddle. Through a progressive, stair-step curriculum, students gain hands-on experience in everything from horse safety and groundwork to advanced riding, in-depth horse knowledge, and equine care management.

While our primary focus is youth development, adults are always welcome to come learn horsemanship. We also offer introductory equine exposure opportunities for elementary-aged children who are ready for a safe and positive first step into the horse world.

A Structured Western Horsemanship Curriculum

Unlike traditional riding lessons that focus only on arena skills, our program offers hundreds of hours of progressive, hands-on equestrian education across 20 clearly defined levels.

Students begin with foundational horse knowledge and safety, then advance step-by-step through:

  • Horse Handling

  • Day-to-Day Horse Care

  • Care Management

  • Ground Work

  • Tack, Tack Care, and Tacking up

  • Ground Driving

  • Mounting and Dismounting

  • Bareback

  • Bit-less Riding Skills

  • Snaffle Bit Riding Skills

  • One-Handed Western Shank Bit Riding Skills

  • Refined Riding Maneuvers

  • Trail Riding Skills

  • Basic Hauling Skills

  • Horseless Equestrian Skills

  • Proficiency in general Western Discipline Patterns

  • Introductory horseback cattle skills

  • Horse Training Skills and Young Horse Development

  • Showing and Internship Opportunities

Every student must become proficient in each level before progressing, ensuring a strong foundation and long-term success. This structured approach creates riders who are not just capable in the saddle—but knowledgeable, dependable, and safe around horses and prepared for horse ownership and equine careers.

Further than Horse Knowledge

Teamwork and responsibility are woven into every level of the program. Students learn to care for shared resources, communicate clearly, and take accountability for their role within the horse ranch environment.

Horsemanship is a full-circle art. It demands social awareness, emotional regulation, discipline, and leadership. At the same time, it naturally reinforces academic foundations—math, science, language skills, and social studies concepts—all applied in real-world situations. Physical fitness and body awareness are equally essential both in the saddle and on the ground.

In this way, horsemanship powerfully complements general academic education, whether traditional or non-traditional. It develops capable, well-rounded young adults by building life skills in practical contexts—opportunities that conventional classrooms and many extracurricular activities may have limited capacity to provide. These qualities are developed over time, and few educators can teach them like the horse.

Programs:

Equine Exposure

30 Minutes | Individual | Elementary-Aged Students & Up

$40 per 30-minute session

Our Equine Exposure sessions are designed for younger children who are ready for a safe and positive introduction to the horse world.

These 30-minute private sessions focus on:

  • Brushing and basic grooming

  • Safe leading skills

  • Lead-line horse riding

  • Age-appropriate horse concepts and safety awareness

This offering is centered on exposure and confidence-building rather than formal equine education. It allows young students to become comfortable around horses while learning foundational respect, safety, and basic horse concepts.

Horsemanship+ Program

5 Hours | Group (5 Participants) | Middle School & High School Aged

$75 per participant per day

In groups of five participants, students progress through our structured 20-level horsemanship curriculum while also engaging in classroom learning and creative projects. Each level builds on the last, helping students develop a strong, well-rounded foundation. The addition of classroom and creative elements creates a full-circle approach to horsemanship education.

Students gain real skills, confidence, and a deep understanding of horse care and horsemanship, while also developing important life skills through peer interaction and the horse–human connection—making this an ideal extracurricular for both homeschool and public school students.

Participants learn:

  • Horse safety and handling

  • Grooming, feeding, and care management

  • Horse-less skills equestrians need to know

  • Groundwork and obstacle work

  • Bit-less and bitted riding skills

  • Patterns, trail riding, cattle work, skill application

  • + So much more!

About Our Lesson Instructor

Equine Program Director, Horse Wrangler, Assistant Coordinator, Social Media girl-- Abbie plays many roles here at WDR, including Lesson Instructor.

Horses have been a constant in Abbie's life since childhood, from the Appaloosa mare she grew up with, to the grade mare, Mustangs, and American Paint Horse she proudly personally owns today. While she regards her childhood horses as some of the best horses who have ever lived, they were never the most trained, and they definitely had their quirks; however, they provided enough struggle to make her eager to pursue horse training from a young age and instill a deep respect for the responsibility, discipline, and partnership required to work with horses well.

Abbie has been training horses --including mustangs-- privately for eight years, and over the past five years, has selectively taken on client horses for training. Prior to moving to Western Diamond Ranch, she owned and operated her own horsemanship and riding lesson program for three years, where she developed the core curriculum that the Western Diamond Horsemanship Program is built upon. Abbie is also an OK Corral Series Certified Equine Assisted Learning Facilitator with hundreds of internship and volunteer hours with Hope Thru Hooves of Pueblo, Colorado, bringing an added depth of understanding in leadership development and personal growth through the horse-human connection.

Abbie's goal with the horsemanship program as a whole is to provide people, particularly youth, with the opportunity to gain the horse knowledge and experience needed for successful horse ownership and entering equine careers in a supportive enviroment.
